What is the difference between a gas heater and a heat pump?

A heater burns fuel (natural gas or propane) or uses electric resistance to generate heat directly, to heat the pool water quickly. It is ideal for on-demand use, like heating a spa or getting ready for a pool party approaching soon. A heater works at all temperatures, even in cold climates. Upfront cost of purchase and installation are usually less expensive; however, you will experience higher operating costs.

Heat pumps extract heat from ambient air, transferring it to the pool water using a compressor and heat exchanger—like an A/C in reverse. To run efficiently, the heat pump needs ambient air above ~50°F. It is slower to heat the pool. Heat pumps use less electricity since they move heat as opposed to generating it. It is more expensive to buy and install than a heater. Heat pumps are great for constantly maintaining the pool temperature over a long season.

While draining your pool may sound like a simple solution, it can cause major damage. For inground pools, the water’s weight holds the structure in place. Without it, groundwater pressure can literally push the pool out of the ground, breaking plumbing and damaging the shell beyond repair. If your pool has a vinyl liner, removing the water causes it to dry out, lose elasticity, and tear when refilled. You may also end up with air pockets and wrinkles. Because of these risks, draining a pool should only be done as a last resort by a professional. Even a green pool is far less serious than the damage caused by draining.

No. An automatic pool cleaner cannot remove algae. While it may appear to sweep it up, it actually redistributes algae back into the water. Because algae is a living organism, it must be killed with pool shock and proper chemicals. Once treated, the dead algae will settle on the pool floor and should be vacuumed to waste for complete removal.

In our region, summer temperatures often stay in the high nineties for weeks, which means your pool needs consistent care. At a minimum, pools should be cleaned and the water chemistry balanced once a week. For pools with heavy swimmer activity, frequent debris, or afternoon thunderstorms, twice-weekly service is best—especially during peak heat when chlorine tablets are used up quickly. If your pool has lighter use and remains mostly free of debris, weekly cleaning and chemical checks are typically sufficient.

A green pool is almost always caused by algae growth, though several factors can contribute. Common issues include clogged filters, debris-filled skimmer baskets, a blocked impeller, or old filter media that restrict water flow—causing chlorine levels to drop. Not running your filter pump long enough each day also leads to water clarity problems. In the South, heavy rains followed by warm temperatures make things worse. Rainwater introduces phosphates, which algae feed on, and the heat creates the perfect environment. When these conditions combine, your pool can turn green overnight.

During the hottest summer months, we recommend running your pool equipment at least 12 hours per day—many pool owners even run it 24/7 for optimal circulation. In cooler months, 6–8 hours daily is usually enough, even if your pool is covered. Remember, moving water is key to preventing algae growth and keeping your pool clean and safe.
